What Is Alcohol Ketoacidosis?

Alcohol is recognized as a contributing factor in more than 200 diseases and injuries. Also known as alcoholic ketoacidosis, alcohol ketoacidosis (AKA) is one of these conditions. It occurs when excessive alcohol leads to a buildup of acids in the bloodstream, creating an imbalance in the body that requires medical attention. As this condition can be potentially life-threatening without treatment, understanding the symptoms is essential for the well-being of yourself or a loved one, especially while navigating an alcohol use disorder (AUD).

When you need clear answers and support, Tranquil Shores is here to help. We’ll explain what alcoholic ketoacidosis is, how it’s diagnosed and the steps involved in treatment.

Understanding Alcoholic Ketoacidosis

Alcoholic ketoacidosis is when the body lacks proper nutrition after a period of very heavy alcohol use and starts producing too many ketones, a type of acid. This disrupts the body’s delicate balance and causes the blood to become too acidic.

AKA is most often seen in those who have an AUD and typically follows an episode of binge drinking. It starts to develop when the person consuming alcohol has become unable to absorb essential nutrients, which can be worsened by the vomiting caused by excessive alcohol consumption.

In response to not having fuel from food, the body breaks down its fat to keep functioning. This process releases ketones, which accumulate and create a highly acidic environment. This initial issue is often made more serious by dehydration. Additionally, the process of metabolizing alcohol releases acetate, an acidic by-product. Together, these factors can lead to a severe case of metabolic acidosis, which often requires prompt medical attention.

Alcoholic Ketoacidosis Symptoms

How someone is affected can vary based on factors like the amount of alcohol consumed, their food intake and hydration levels. That said, some symptoms are especially common, including:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Muscle aches
  • Abdominal pain
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Rapid breathing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Trembling or tremors
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Confusion or an altered mental state
  • Increased thirst and a dry mouth due to dehydration

If you or a loved one shows any signs of AKA, seek emergency care as soon as possible. Individuals often recover fully without lingering consequences when this condition is identified and treated promptly. Without treatment, AKA can lead to cardiac arrest, kidney failure or other potentially life-threatening outcomes.

Diagnosing Alcoholic Ketoacidosis

A health care provider must diagnose and treat AKA, so a trip to the hospital or clinic is required. To make the diagnosis, a doctor will perform a comprehensive evaluation that typically involves learning more about the person’s medical history and conducting a physical exam.

To confirm the diagnosis and rule out any conditions that have similar symptoms, medical professionals will take blood and urine samples to measure

  • Blood glucose levels
  • Ketone levels
  • Electrolyte levels
  • Acid-base balance (pH)

Treating Alcoholic Ketoacidosis

Treatment for AKA involves two essential stages — addressing the immediate health crisis and supporting the person’s long-term recovery from the underlying issues related to alcohol abuse.

Treating Alcoholic Ketoacidosis

Immediate Medical Care

The initial focus of AKA treatment is to safely restore the body’s natural balance. This is done by providing IV fluids to address dehydration and carefully monitoring electrolyte levels. Medical professionals may administer various vitamins, nutrients or medications to help the body use its proper fuel source again and to manage symptoms.

Long-Term Addiction Recovery

After the medical emergency has been stabilized and resolved, seeking treatment for addiction recovery is often the best next step. Working toward sobriety can help you or your loved one avoid future adverse effects of alcohol on the body.

One of the most important considerations when choosing a recovery program is finding one that feels right for the individual and their family. At Tranquil Shores, we focus on therapies and healing modalities that honor our clients’ needs, with dual-diagnosis treatments available to address any co-occurring mental conditions. This comprehensive support helps pave the way for long-term wellness.

Excessive Alcohol Use and Malnutrition

Heavy drinking can lead to malnutrition — this is a key reason why struggling with an AUD can put someone at higher risk of developing AKA. As this substance can reduce a person’s appetite, someone drinking alcohol often skips out on meals or forgets to eat. While such beverages contain calories, they don’t provide the body with the nutrients it needs to function. Over time, this can lead to malnutrition.

Long-term heavy drinking can also impact the digestive system’s ability to absorb nutrients. This means that even when the individual does eat, their body doesn’t get the full benefits from the food they eat. Alcohol can also directly harm the organs in the digestive system, notably the liver. Our liver is responsible for processing nutrients from our food, but it can’t function correctly when this essential process is impaired. As a result, a person can become malnourished despite eating enough food.

Physical Signs of Malnutrition From Drinking

Recognizing the physical signs of alcohol-related malnutrition is an essential step for anyone affected by an AUD. This awareness allows you to seek nutritional or medical support sooner, which can make all the difference in helping to prevent severe conditions like AKA.

Changes that could indicate that someone is malnourished include

  • A visible loss of muscle tone or mass
  • Unexplained or unintentional weight loss
  • Dry and flaky or pale skin
  • Wounds that are slow to heal
  • Hair that appears dry and brittle
  • Ridged, brittle or spoon-shaped nails
  • Issues with oral health, such as bleeding or swollen gums
