The Importance of Self-Empathy in Recovery

Why Self-Compassion is Necessary in Recovery

When embarking on the journey toward recovery and wellness, it is important to show yourself the kindness and patience you deserve. The experts at Tranquil Shores are here to help you work toward a more compassionate relationship with yourself as you work toward a sober lifestyle.

Developing Self-Empathy

Talk to Your Younger Self

Whether you struggle with substance abuse or not, it is common for people to be overly critical and harsh with themselves when making mistakes. A simple way to combat this inherently negative behavior is to talk to yourself as you would a child. This helps you calmly assess different situations and view them as an opportunity to learn and grow rather than chastise yourself.

Practice Mindfulness Meditation

Many people struggling with substance use disorders also suffer from mental health issues like anxiety and depression, especially in recovery. Fortunately, practicing mindfulness meditation can pull you out of your head and bring you back to your present self.

When you feel overwhelmed, try closing your eyes and focusing on your breath and the current sensations you can physically feel to help quiet your anxious thoughts.

Acknowledge Your Accomplishments

While it’s easy to focus on your shortcomings when making a commitment to yourself to change your lifestyle, it’s important to acknowledge your accomplishments. While sobriety is a life-long process that takes time and dedication, your little wins add up to help you meet that goal each and every day.

When you’re feeling down on yourself, be sure to look at where you began and how far you’ve come since then.

Life is so much better after recovery. I'm in better spirits. I can conquer almost anything on my own. And I couldn't be happier.

Recovery is about the beginning of a new life and not about dwelling on what you might have done in the past. The counseling, along with the spiritual basis for the counseling is second to none!

The people cared about me and the people took me under their wing. They not only saved my life, but they saved my brothers and in a way my sons.

This treatment center was instrumental in helping a loved one get sober. Condos on the beach are clean and comfortable. The frequent individual counseling sessions, family education, and weekly meetings with the psychiatrist were so exceptional.
