National Recovery Month

September is National Recovery Month and here at Tranquil Shores, we wanted to share some information about it.
The topic of addiction has evolved in our society from being a taboo topic to being better understood in recent years. It was articulated well by Scott Dehorty, MSW, LCSW-C, a pain recovery specialist and manager of The Pain Recovery Program at the non-profit Father Martin’s Ashley treatment center. He is the author of Chronic Pain 360. He said in a post, “The thinking that, “It won’t happen to me” or “They chose to do that to themselves,” is uninformed and cruel to those suffering. We must stop looking at addiction as a moral failing, but as the serious disease that it is. Awareness of the issue and proper treatment are the best lines of defense in combating this debilitating epidemic”.

With that being said, taking September to celebrate National Recovery Month has been an effective and necessary vehicle to build awareness about substance abuse and mental health disorders. As a nation, we have progressed greatly to looking at it as something individuals need to be legitimately treated for.

National Recovery Month is in its 26th year of promotion and focuses on prevention, treatment, and recovery services for individuals in need.
